The collection of Rookwood tiles at the Cincinnati Art Museum inspired me to make my own art tiles. It’s exciting to learn a new way of making art, but there is always an obstacle between what I WANT TO MAKE and WHAT I AM ABLE TO MAKE before developing the skills.

I kept my first design simple- a dove with olive branch.
mould making is an art of its own—with a tricky learning curve. I ruined the sheep tile that I spent a few hours working on.
fortunately I was able to remember how I did it and made a better version the second time.

Mould making outside—because it’s a messy process (and a pretty day!)

The finished sheep and dove mould!

After a few trials and errors, I’m getting the hang of it, and FINALLY getting some decent clay tiles–hope to start firing them next week! Stay tuned!
